Jane M. Lindsey, DVM
Dr. Lindsey received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, with honors, in 1995 from Oklahoma State University. She has over 200 hours of continuing education credits in behavior medicine since veterinary school.
Her interest in animal behavior actually started before veterinary school, influenced by Dr. Robert M. Miller whose landmark work on equine foal imprinting was her introduction. She started training dogs when she was in junior high school. She trained her first dog in obedience at age 15 and showed him to his American Kennel Club (AKC) Companion Dog Obedience title in three straight shows. He attained the highest scores for his breed in the U.S. that year.
Before veterinary school she raised, trained and showed horses in jumping and dressage competition for 20 years. She started and taught the horsemanship and hunt seat equitation course at UCSD Extension for three years.
In veterinary practice Dr. Lindsey found there is a great need for behavior therapy and effective, appropriate dog training (cats too) so she started BehaviorSelf to address that need for her veterinary clients, and it grew from there.
In recent years she began training service and therapy dogs. All her own dogs are California State certified service dogs, certified therapy dogs, and AKC certified Canine Good Citizens. They go to homes and institutions to provide comfort and companionship, but they put on a great show of tricks and feats as well.
Dr. Lindsey is licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California. All her professional activities, postdoctoral education, and professional associations emphasize the use of the principles of operant conditioning and a positive reinforcement reward-based approach to training, and behavior therapy based on scientific principles developed for pet animals using peer reviewed research in the animal behavior and veterinary professions.
