BehaviorSelf is a veterinary service designed by Jane M. Lindsey, DVM, to help owners learn to resolve or manage behavior problems in their dogs.
Many behavior problems are the result of accidental incorrect training, use of inappropriate training methods, or simply lack of training. Some behavior problems like obsessive compulsive behaviors, separation and other anxieties, self destructive behaviors, many aggressive behaviors, fears and phobias, destructive behaviors and some house soiling behaviors are behavior disorders.
Behavior disorders may require training or retraining as well as behavior modification therapy. Sometimes behavior modification drug therapy is useful as well. Drug therapy may be temporary or permanent in some cases.
Behavior problems may actually be medical disorders that require diagnosis and treatment by a veterinarian.
If your dog or cat has a behavior problem a veterinarian is your best partner to work toward a solution, especially when underlying medical conditions exist or drug therapy is part of the prescribed treatment plan.
Some behavior problems are not abnormal behaviors but their expressions are not safe or compatible with family life.
Dr. Lindsey can evaluate your pet, assess for medical conditions, diagnose behavior problems and work with you to reach solutions. A treatment plan (or training program) will be custom tailored to each individual family, based on the behavior therapy needs or training goals of the individuals involved.
